Symptoms of Dog Worms

by admin on July 17, 2010

There are 5 different types of worms in dogs. It is important that you observe the symptoms of dog worms as quickly as possible. Although some symptoms are common to each type of worm, there are some exclusive to their type.

The different types of worms are: roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, whipworms and heartworms. Roundworms are the most common type of worms, and most of this article corresponds to roundworm symptoms. Hookworms and heartworms are the most dangerous worms, with the potential to be fatal to the dog. Remember that some types of worms, including roundworms and hookworms, can be transmitted to humans.

General symptoms include a dull coat, weight loss and loss of appetite, coughing, lethargy, diarrhoea and vomiting. Healthy dogs have shiny coats so it is reasonably obvious when a coat is dull. If you begin to see weight loss, ensure that you haven’t recently changed the dog’s diet or started feeding different dog food. Weight loss is one of the typical symptoms of dog worms.

Loss of appetite is also very apparent, as a dog’s meal is usually their highlight of the day. Coughing is also easy to spot.

Lethargy is a typical symptom of dog disease. When a dog stops being so eager to go on walks, or isn’t as playful as normal, it is a sign that something is wrong. If they seem to have a lot less energy, look out for some of the other symptoms of dog worms mentioned above.

Finally, diarrhoea and vomiting. These two symptoms lie at the more extreme end of the scale, and are very obvious. However, like the others, they can be symptoms of many dog diseases.

It is only when you start observing a combination of these symptoms that you can be sure that they are symptoms of dog worms. If you have suspicions that the dog has worms, try examining their faeces. If you see rice shaped gorges, or tunnels that look like they may have been caused by worms, get on to the phone to your vet. They can prescribe to you best what action to take next, although worms is one of the more minor problems in dogs. However in serious cases, it can be very damaging and even lead to death.
