Always Itchy - Cowboys Mama - 10-05-2011 09:26 AM My Boston Terrier Bullet is always licking his skin and beans. I have tried several different shampoos and conditioners and nothing seems to help....any suggestions? I feel bad for my little guy. [img] [/img]
RE: Always Itchy - Elektra - 10-07-2011 02:22 PM Licking themselves is a pretty normal thing for male dogs. If he is doing it excessively he might have a urinary tract infection or even allergies. Is he urinating normally? Have you tried using a hypoallergenic shampoo/conditioner? If it's not excessive than it's pretty normal... disgusting, but normal.

He is urinating regularly and I have tried a dozen different hypoallergenic shampoo/conditioners.....it almost seems like it's a compulsive behavior. My worry is that he itches so much that his skin gets all red and bumpy.....I have some sprays that help once this happens, just wish I knew how to prevent.....any more advise would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!
RE: Always Itchy - EdwardSmith - 02-11-2012 09:15 PM It could be a food allergy. Once he starts licking the skin gets bacteria growing on it and it itches more. A cycle of licking is then started. I would look over his food as a possibility. The vet can give you meds to make the infection and itch go away. RE: Always Itchy - AbelGoring - 05-15-2012 09:57 PM Licking is usually a regular action, as dogs prefer to groom on their own. Nevertheless, in the event the licking is extreme this behavior might point to a physical or psychological concern. Abnormal licking may cause skin disease and hair thinning, therefore the cause should be recognized and correct treatment needs to be given.
